Summary

This chapter describes California as the Joads and other migrants arrive. At first the author describes California as a land filled with the life of trees bending with the heavy produce of fruits and flowers. "The full green hills are round and soft like breasts(Pg.346)." The hills and valleys are surrounded by trees and vegetable lands. The state is prosperous due to the skillful laborers who dedicate time for the health of their produce. However, the description changes from positive to negative as the author characterizes how the fruits and vegetables begin to rot and become unworthy because the hungry people are not able to purchase the food. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage(Pg.349)." At the closing of the chapter the people are defined as growing heavy with anger and are looking for revenge.
